Rest in Peace Sylvia and SK John Cooper – help requested (UPDATE w/Donate button)

December 16th, 2009 · No Comments

From DD/GK Mike Kozakiewicz: I come to you today with a heavy heart, and with a plea for help. Our current State Chief Squire is Dylan Cooper. Dylan is an honor student at Divine Child High School in Dearborn, and an eight-year member of Fr. Daniel A. Lord Circle #801 in Detroit. He, along with his brother Sebastian, have not had the easiest home life. Sebastian has lived in Albi, France with his mother for the last several years, but has come home during the summer months to visit and attend events with Circle 801. On Saturday morning, Dylan and Sebastian’s father, John Cooper, passed away. Last night (early Tuesday morning), their grandmother, Sylvia Cooper, passed away. The family is in the process of planning a viewing and funeral mass for both John and Sylvia which will be held this weekend. Sebastian is in the process of being informed of the situation as I type this letter. The members of Circle 801, and their sponsoring council are trying to raise enough funds for a plane ticket from Paris to Detroit so that Sebastian can properly grieve with his family. They have currently raised approximately $1,000.00, but it is not enough. I am asking for any and all assistance that anyone can provide to help pay for the plane ticket and the funeral. This is exactly the type of situation that Venerable Fr. McGivney had in mind when he founded our great order. Please help us during this time. If you can help, please make any donations payable to “Holy Cross #2739″ and write “Cooper” in the memo line. Please help us help our future knights as they cope with this extremely difficult situation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me [DD/GK Mike Kozakiewicz] at (313) 779-1348 or Jim Vote at (248) 470-2462.

UPDATE: Here is a Paypal donation button. You do NOT need a Paypal account to donate:

Supreme Council Press Release: Pledge victory in federal court

October 1st, 2009 · No Comments

(MANCHESTER, NH) – The Knights of Columbus scored an important victory in federal court in New Hampshire on Wednesday, September 30, when U.S. District Judge Steven McAuliffe upheld the constitutionality of the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Atheist Michael Newdow had filed the lawsuit against the school system in Hanover, New Hampshire on behalf of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, in a case that mirrored his earlier lawsuit against schools in and near Sacramento, California.

As with the California case, the Knights of Columbus sought and received permission from the court to become a “defendant intervenor,” allowing attorneys representing the Order (from the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty) to participate directly in the court proceedings.

The California case, argued before a panel of the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in December 2007, has still not been decided. Read the New Hampshire court decision.

Read the Knights of Columbus Fact Sheet about the Pledge of Allegiance and recent litigation.
